Their Secret? I'm Guessing "Free Beer"
I go to London, and look what I miss: The Vancouver Strobist group did a collective double-take when none other than Joe McNally showed up for their monthly meetup. He was in town for a gig, and probably just needed a little help figuring out that CLS stuff. (The RainCity Strobists are really good at that CLS stuff.)
Joe blogged about it, and you have to know that the group itself is feeling pretty fine. This pretty much pwns the Seattle group in coolness factor.
I'm just sayin'.

Awesome photo Wayne! (I'm guy third from the left)
really good "at" that CLS stuff? Sorry, just trying to make sense!
Joe's visit inspired me to start a challenge to VanStrobists based on his demonstration... I'd love to welcome others to try the same technique.. challenge details here:

I think a shout-out to Andrew Strain is well-deserved.. With, as I understand, a truly busy schedule, he still managed to put a lot of effort into organizing what was, in my opinion, the best meet so far.
I know there's a video in the works, so stay tuned!
So when are YOU going to make a trip up here, David? :)
David,
Very cool photo with all the strobes and umbrellas.
Also, thanks for the article on the beauty dish. I keep forgetting I need to make one.
Robert
This photo ownz all of them in COOLNESS!!
Joe was a humble and gracious guest at our event. The 20 or so of us there learned a ton in the 1hr 45mins that he was there. He answered every question we threw at him and offered a lot of candid responses that he could have sugar coated.
After that we could have said "Ok..that made our day/week/year...let's go home!" but we still stuck around for the rest of the day and created setup after setup and put our one lone model, Cindy to work! It was a great day!
So when are you coming to Vancouver, David? :)
Congrats to the Vancouver strobists, pretty cool group and they deserve the shout out, I frequently check them out, puts the Toronto group to shame.
The irony is that Joe has a workshop for a measly $50, and martin prihoda who used to post in that group before he vanished from Flickr is charging $800 (yes, you read that right) for his Toronto/Vancouver workshops.
Good on Joe, such a stand up guy.
I knew I should've stayed on the coast. I'm trying to get an Edmonton group meetup going. There's an Edmonton strobist group on flickr. Everyone in the dark tundra that is my new home, sign up. We'll have to improvise for a backdrop though, for try as I may, the ocean is a stubborn mule and just won't move 1200 km inland no matter what i say.
AndyM: Joe actually was doing a 5 day workshop for $2000 while he was in Vancouver. So his $50 for three hours should be seen in relation to that. Martin Prihoda was AT last night's talk, by the way, and I don't think Joe would poo poo anything that Prihoda has been doing. From what I could see Martin's workshops are over two days. Again, not quite the same comparison is it?
One more thing Andy, Martin Prihoda was the guest of the very first Vancouver Strobist meet. So what we are lauding Joe McNally for, Martin did the same thing for us right at the beginning. I could even say his example gave us a kick start.
Have you attended his workshop? It's one thing to have a problem with the quality of it, but there's no need for the hate just because he chooses to set a price for something of value.
I live in Vancouver and I'm really annoyed that I missed the McNally meet!
You should definitely come, David--it's a nice place :D
I would've loved to have Martin at our workshop as well, but he was running his own shindig last weekend. Can't argue with the man for making money, and as Keith said, he's been a big help to our group in the past.
As Sean mentioned above, I'm working on a video that should be up within a week. Stay tuned...
Wow, Joe McNally, thats cool. And all we got in Seattle was that David Hobby character :)
Though I'll have to say the Northwest as a whole has got it going on. I saw in JPG magazine that portland has some cool stuff going on as well.
Challenge to my temporary Belgian photogs: This is our example. Lets make it happen!
When it comes to Flash photography, I'm just a dabbler (my focus is primarily landscapes), but I came to Joe's 3 hour workshop on Tuesday, and I must say it was inspirational. It's great to see that there is such an active community in Vancouver, I think I will look up the Vancouver Strobist group and start putting that SB800 to better use.
Ogalthorpe is J-E-A-L-O-U-S!!
Nice...good idea with umbrella with flash ;)
Wow... what an amazing Strobist meet! When Andrew hinted at a mystery guest, and even though I heard that Joe was in town, I was so shocked and impressed that he came out to our meetup and gave us such a inspirational lesson in lighting.
Joe's such a down-to-earth and approachable guy... I was so excited to see him in action and to hear the thought processes as he set up the different shots.
Thank you Joe!
Your turn David... ;)
oh no he didn't! (with attitude). I'm a seattle strobist!
Van City inspired me to create a Winnipeg group
My daughter graduated from college, came home and said what will I do. She called a professor, who gave her a phone # of a researcher at the national zoo. She never got to him ,but the secretary said come work for free. She did it for six months and then they started to pay her. Eventually they helped her get into a PHD program. Pt is she started for free.

That photo is rad!
Where do you find info on the VR Strobist folks? Is there a contact person etc?
Gord
Gord: just go to the Flickr group. There is no one contact, really.
Vancouver Strobist.
The photo is so cool!
