Mount Quackatoa

Okay, so it is really the Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, not the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia. But who can pass up a pun that bad?

Not me, that's who.

I'm back from Costa Rica and digging through the mountain of email. But I could not resist sticking a photo our trip mascot up. For those of you who have been living under a rock, it's from Aaron Johnson's What The Duck comic strip. (Plush version here.)

Lots to do to catch up, coupla posts to write from shoots in CR, and will be sticking trip pix in this Flickr set, if you are interested.

And the little Canon G9 came in handy to underexpose that backlit volcano and sync "What The" at 1/500th at f/5.6 at ISO 80 to bring him back up. Fortunately, the G9 will sync at any speed if you know the trick.

Had that punchline rolling out of my mouth before even reading the headline... *sigh*

Geek minds pun alike.

What awesome cloud-cover! Did the Acer come in handy quite nicely? I'm wondering if my Asus Eee would handle photo-storage to an external USB hdd, and I've been eyeballing my camera bag lately to see if it'd be carry-able.

It was a hoot running into you and Susan in Monteverde. Great fun catching up after 20+ years. I just hope all the old gear I sold to you still works.

I finally got sick of being rained on and fled to the beach at Playa Grande. I've been using my underwater housing to shoot surfers here. Sort of like trying to photograph in a washing machine.

1/2500 is nothing for the g9... you can sync up to 1/20.000 and faster with flash... oh, and you dont have to use the trick as well, you can sync the internal flash as well...

Thanks for all your work. I've been a reader for some time and have learned TONS from you. Using a flash is one of the harder things in photography. Thanks for all that you've done to make it easier for us. Your DVD's are great!

Simple question, which SPECIFIC MODEL LED flash do you use ? (3W, AA-powered CREE LED flashlight) I'm surprised that these guys only have one bulb and say that they only last < 2hrs.

Looks like fun! The shot of the hot springs takes me back to my honeymoon, good times. Time go go back.

I hope to see tips on strobist methods for travel photography (without upsetting the flow of the vacation!)

Thanks Mr. Strobist

Sorry, but if your point and shoot has a hot shoe and you're using it with an accessory flash, it's hardly a "point and shoot" camera.

And for anyone who wanted to get a plsuh duck, now they have to wait. Strobist strikes agains!! lol I just lookat WTD yesterday and they had the ducks in stock, now today... Gone. Do you get paid for your product placements David? I kid. ;) With this economy there would be a lot of companies looking for you to help boost their bottom line with talk of their items. Too late for Circuit City tho.

Ahh, that explains the 1/1000th sych I was able to get with my poverty wizards and my G10. I didn't even think of trying a faster sync with a regular PC cord. Man I love my G10 more and more every day.

Welcome back DH!! Can't wait to see the rest of the pics, and to see what you were cooking up in C.R.

Although, the way the weather has been in this part of the country, you may have wished you stayed in C.R.

Did Arenal do it's light show for you? Nothing like sitting in that hot spring and watching giant glowing boulders spew out of the top.

Will the 1/2500 sync speed also work with the G10?
