Bridging the Gap Between Pocket Wizard and the eBay Remotes
Just hitting the street: The Elinchrom Skyport, a new mid-price flash remote that will provide a much-needed option for photographers not named Bill Gates (and hopefully get Pocket Wizard to lower their prices a tad.)At least one Strobist reader has gotten his grubby little hands on a set, and is talking about it in the Flickr Strobist threads.

This looks intriguing, I bought the ebay transmitter/receivers a few weeks ago and they've been working pretty well for the most part. However, I have had some misfires, one time one of the receivers went completely dead during a shoot too but it started working again the next time I used it.
I was thinking of upgrading to pocketwizards hopefully once I get a few more paychecks.
Any idea how long the cr2 batteries in the receiver on the ebay units should last? ...If it's turned to the "off" position when not in use.
has no one heard of Quantum radio slaves? they are quite a bit cheaper that P-Dubs and work like a charm...I have a set and have never missed a shot and have distances well over a few hundred feet...

Anon:
Lots of folks have heard of Quantum slaves. many own or owned tham. Many promptly dumped them when the PW brand hit the market.
Why?
Erratic operation - plenty of mystery trips.
No positive on/off indication reminder. Just that pesky I/O indicator and no pilot light.
The early version used 9v batteries. Without positive power on /off indication, they went back in the case many times in the on position.
Short battey life.
Finally some real competition.
Awwright.
How long before we can buy them in the U.S of A.?
Got my universal transmitter and pair of receivers today..B&H..
Using them with 2 285HV via Flashzebra.com adapter cords (I think those are literally the only way Skyports will work with 285HV).
All I can say at this point is that they work (100% in tests so far), they're physically as fine as could be(precision plastic, come with various accessories and very good case), the seem rugged (the antenna isn't likely to break and folds down when not necessary) they're VERY small.
...there's a power-on light and IMO there's no way the on button could be pushed by accident.
I'm using these two 285HV for main lights, with an old Sunpak 411 and peanut slave for background...IMO the 411 was a LOT better than Vivitar 283 (it's arch enemy), but they're rare.
