It's That Time of Year: Football Preview Shots

Mark Cornelison, a shooter for the Lexington Herald (in Kentucky in the US) has posted a video on shooting football preview portraits. Good stuff. Reminds me of my former Patuxent Publishing colleague Fran Gardler's work. (He occasionally shoots with the Speed Graphic, too.)

I love the multi-angle, hard light look. And as a bonus, you can totally do this with speedlights as there are no light softeners to eat up your watt-seconds.

(Thanks for the heads-up in the comments, Jonathan.)

Thanks a ton for sharing this. As a Louisville resident (and UofL employee for that matter) it is intriguing to see the "behind the scene" setup of the photos I see in the papers here.

Both very talented photographers.

Hey, great post :)

Semi-long-time (2 weeks) reader, first time poster. haha.

I really enjoyed reading lighting 101 and uhm..all the other posts, i think i've read about 90% of 'em by now :D

Also the post about Annie doing the (RED) thing was awesome!

When you're in Paris for the seminar, why don't you make a quick stop in Amsterdam for us Dutch people ;-)

Thanks for your blogging David :)

Another Brian from Louisville here... great stuff! I saw some of those shots in the Courier-Journal last weekend. Btw, I discovered Strobist last week and have been reading as much as I can since. Thanks!

Hey senor Dave:

Timely info! I've got a buddy with 6th grade football team & I'll follow them through the year. I can easily find me a brick, shady wall to do a focused shot of each player (only 14 on team). Thanks, again.

Under Armour shirt, laughing athletes, but a awesome intimidating portrait. If I only had a dollar for every time I was in this same exact situation. Ha.

Nonetheless, nice images!

Well nevermind what I said about including a photo or video link in order to attract traffic from an RSS reader. Google's reader has all of the photos and the video! This is not the case with other blogs that I read, even that have the full text. You may be able to alter that setting somehow.

The most telling quote for me out of this: "We may work at different places but it's all a team effort."

How great an attitude is that!

That was something that really came through on the Florida strobist video, as well. Didn't seem like there were a lot of egos big-footing the get together, slinging around pro equipment and snubbing the beginners. It was, or at least it seemed so on the video, a team effort.

Nice stuff. I was wondering why he was shooting polaroids at first, then I remembered how much I used to love type 55. Do they still make it? I have not shot any in several years and don't have a 4x5 anymore, but I did some great stuff with those VC negatives.

I was recently tapped to shoot a high school game and was hoping to find some information on this site. Does anyone know where this video can be watched? I tried a Google search and a YouTube search.

Thanks
