Nikon Digital Learning Center on Balancing Flash and Ambient
Dave Black, who does some cool things with Nikon speedlights, has an article up on the Nikon Digital Learning Center that is worth a read. He details three situations, combining flash and ambient. Which, coincidentally, is exactly what we'll be working on starting this week in Lighting 102. So eyes front, you folks sleeping in the back.
Dave takes advantage of Nikon CLS, but I have heard somewhere that it can also be done in manual.

He has more lengthy versions of what appeared on the Nikon site on his own website:

i dont know why he would use the fp mode...sure you get a faster shutter but you have to open up your aperture a stop, i could see if you needed to stop action, but 250 or 500 does it fine
Hey, wanted to pass on a link to a cool ring light that clips onto your SB flash. Only problem; it's sold in the UK.

BTW, David... great site!
there is 1 thing we can't do manually. Use the High Speed sync.
Why is it that in TTL mode, using the Nikon Creative Ligthing System , I can sync my flashes (sb-800 only, of course...) up to 1/8000 but not in manual mode?
I may be wrong, but if my camera can triker a bunch of flashes wireless and, at the same time, control the output on every single flashes "Trough The Lens", why is it impossible to just trikker the same flashes, manually set up, at that same high sync speed, using pocket wizards? no need for the camera to send and receive TTL infos...
Very cool...the WB tip is great, then balancing with the warm filters. I was especially enlightened about the blurred shot where he said that the part of the picture that was flashed by the strobe would freeze and the rest would blur! WOW!
