Got a Few Dozen Flashes Sitting Around? No?

I love bootstrap lighting ideas.

Darien Chin, of of those crowd-sourcy, peer-to-peer Seattle photogs, made a very creative shot of his car with just a few speedlights. It could have been even cooler, but Darien only had three good sets of AA batts. Click the pic to see how he did it.

(Bonus points for use of duct tape as a clamp...)

I always hope it's mirrors so I can do the same gag with a video camera. Alas.

I wish my brain could think of things like this. I seriously thought someone just had a bunch of strobes!

Ha! I totally guessed it.

This is similar in execution to a car shoot video you posted ages ago. A photog set up a bulb exposure, and popped a single light into a small softbox over and around classic cars. He created the effect of a very large light source, instead of this guy, who is recreating the effect of many light sources.

I can't find the video right now, but I only did a cursory search.

Be careful with those really DIY flash mounts. I have an sb-26 with a busted LCD screen, lost to an enthusiastic ball-bungee.

Best part of all of this? The ironic Exif info:

"Flash: Flash did not fire"

Rrreally....

Not trying to sound critical; but why use more than one Pocket Wizard receiver? With all the strobes being stationary and in close proximity, couldn't you rig a cord from each strobe to a single Pocket Wizard?

I don't own a Pocket Wizard, but you can already see how cheap I am. I'm using the MicroSync system and improvising with three strobes and only one transmitter/receiver.

The duct-tape is something I can completely relate to!

I was doing the math on how much $$ for the PW's when I read on!! I;m still in newbie category still and there's more proof :) -- Outstanding whats amazing is how evenly spaced you got them going around the car -- The idea is great and the execution is outstanding!! nice job

PositivePaul hit the nail on the head. Flash: Did not fire was the icing on the cake. Great idea.
