Newb Catch-up Day

Is all this off-camera light stuff making your eyes glaze over? We get our fair share of fnugy's (as McNally would say) around here. And we can sometimes lose track of how far we have come as a group since the site began back in 2006.

Fortunately, Paul Duncan (the guy who did the Bogus Artificial Ring Flash and the strobe spotlight thingie) has put together a very nice slideshow video that really nails the basics.

Take a look if you are new. Or even if you are old. And if you haven't yet hit Lighting 101, you'll have a bit of a head start after seeing Paul's very cool slideshow. (Thanks Paul!)

Exactly what I've been looking for! I'm really making an effort to learn more about lighting, even though I only have a single Speedlite, and this site has been invaluable.

Thanks!

Brilliant Stuff!

Clear, concise, easy to understand and with great lighting examples. I can see this links being sent to anyone and everyone who needs help understanding the basics of lighting and as a great introdunction to the Strobist world.

Great work, I have already sent it to 2 friends of mine who are budding photographers and it's already explained a lot to them!!

Wow, I considered myself to be something of an accomplished Strobist, Yet I had not figured out the angle of the umbrella mounting thing!!!

I wondered why my flashes seemed to point in strange directions part of the time.

Great video/sideshow!

Great video, Paul! Wish I would have had this a few months ago after I got started and bought my first umbrella adapter! You are right, the packaging was not good (and the second one, which cost twice as much, had no packaging/instructions at all!). This is a must see for everyone that is new/semi-new to the strobist way of lighting!

Paul,

Thanks that helped a great deal.

Any chance of getting that in Quicktime so I can download and watch over while setting up and practicing?

That's great.

Getting into this Strobist thing, I've been disappointed by Wikipedia's coverage of these topics. I encourage anyone interested to help work on pages such as flash synchronization, softbox, and others. There isn't even a page for snoot yet.

Great video. I've noticed a distinct lack of coverage on Wikipedia of intro strobist topics. I encourage any of you to head over there and improve pages such as flash synchronization, softbox, and Reflector (photography), among others.

A little effort would go a long way making Wikipedia a great flash-photography and lighting encyclopedia.

Thanks a ton Paul.

My friend has just got her first flash and I was quick to direct her here to Strobist. Though reading through all the 101 posts was proving difficult.

This will make her first steps a LOT easier.

Very well done.

This is excellent, just the right speed, covers everything with enough depth to explain the basics.

I'll be passing it onto any narbs I encounter.

I'm really glad he explains the brolly adapter part so well as I get endless people asking me how to use it when they take it out of the useless packaging.

David-
Where are all of the pdf's located? I know I saw one for lighting 101, but have not been able to find it again, and I would like to download and print all pdf's that are available. I looked, but have not been able to find any.
Thanks!
