Orbis Ring Flash Adapter Details

An email from Enlight Photo dropped into my box tonight with some fresh detail on the upcoming Orbis Ring Flash adapter. It's similar in function (if not design) to the Ray Flash adapter, with some key differences:

• The flash is mounted off-camera, similar to many of the DIY designs we have seen.

• From the light source reflections in some of the test shots on the updated website, it appears to be a little softer (bigger) light source than the Ray Flash.

• Price is said to be "under $200".

• No word on efficiency, relative to direct flash. (Ray Flash is minus just one stop compared to direct flash.)

More info, email list sign up, pre-sale info, etc. -- here.

Sounds interesting. I've been debating between the ABR800 and ray flash.

This looks like a quality product, and nicely priced too. The proof will be in the pudding... as they say. I'm looking forward to seeing more - I'm gonna buy me one!

Just when I was about to get the Ray Flash! Now I'll have to wait for some reviews on this bad boy. The ability for it to be off camera is a major plus.

Under 200 clams is much more reasonable. If the quality is there, sales should be good. Let's hope prices on modifiers like this keep coming down for all us ghetto strobists.

From the baby demo photo, the catch seems much better than the "bitten bagel" from Ray Flash, but there is still a little dent!?

I may well be missing something here but why would there be a need for a ring flash that could be used off camera? Isn't the ring supposed to go around the lens?

Looks good... but from the sample photos on their site I get the impression that they think their customer base is a mix of parents and pornographers.

I must be very naive about ring flashes.

With the ray flash the flash is used on camera, with this the flash is not mounted on the camera, but underneath the ringlight, thats what they mean with off camera.

but sounds really interesting and the results look better than with the ray flash.

I'm interested!

David, Has Orbis offered you a demo unit? They'd be silly not to ask you to be a beta tester.

Yeah, but the question is, when they go onto Soccer Mom blogs and rag about "professional" photographers, do they cower in anonymity, too?

If I'm not mistaken, it appears that the photographer is holding the flash unit with one hand and the camera with the other. Some photos show an off camera wire attached. Doesn't that sound pretty cumbersome?

Here's a DIY guide for a cheap macro ring flash that I made with fibre optics. It's quite durable and can go in the gadget bag while attached to your lens. Tested on a K20D with a classic Tamron 90 2.5 and matching 2X converter and also on the Pentax DFA 100 2.8. My web design skills are horrible - please be patient as it loads. A fan of the blog on the Pentax forum recommend I also post the plans here. This is a great blog and I will be back for more. Go to: http://www.fring.we.bs

Enjoy

Great question... are they gonna let you test an Orbis? Have they announced an official release date or have the RayFlash makers chained them too some courtroom so they can block the sale of it or sumthin? All I know is that at $169.00 and universal mounting to any major hotshoe flash sucks me in and doesnt spit!

I was in email contact with the company a few weeks back and was advised that there has been a delay in production completion. I too am eagerly awaiting the product.

I also wonder why having a ring light powered by an off-camera flash is considered a good idea. It's probably okay, especially in a studio, to mount a flash and a ring light on a stand and then poke a camera through it, but the Ray Flash mounts on the camera so you can move with it, and that's a good thing. I like the idea of a $200 pricepoint, though. At $300, the Ray Flash is a bit steep, especially when the Buff ABR800, admittedly a quite different product, is only a hundred bucks more.

Just got mine. Looks like a well thought out piece of kit, but have to say, bit of a handful balancing the D3/28-70 2.8 in one hand and the SB-800 and Orbis in the other. I got the impression the flash snapped firmly into the Orbis, but not the case. Looking forward to checking out the results.

I love the Orbis! I creates great light and is flexible to use. Pop it on easily and shoot with or without it freely. I started a group on Flickr so we can all share photos. http://www.flickr.com/groups/926962@N25/
