Nick Turpin Ditches his SB-800s for a Cell Phone

(RSS and email subscribers may have to click on the post title to see the video.)

Remember Nick Turpin, who did those beautiful SB-800-lit street portraits of thriller writers for Arena Magazine?

Now, he has ditched even those and is shooting his current month-long campaign for Samsung using only a cell phone. No DSLRs, no flashes, no female assistants holding long poles. And he is not even in control of what he is shooting -- you are.

Your clicks on each new photo in the the evolving site decide where he is going next. It is live now, at The Photographic Adventures of Nick Turpin. You can follow his cell-phone video diary from his trek via his YouTube Channel, too.

Wish we got an 8MP proper lens camera made into a mobile phone here in the States.

Also, Check this link out. A guy by the name of Robert Benson made wireless triggers by hand held radios/walky talkies. Seems pretty cool and I didn't think I'd seen this on strobist yet...

What a great campaign concept as well.

David, I think you just linked up ten times more folks to his site than he previously had. I think marketing for the idea was glad you did. Good catch.

David, as a fan of good quality photos with cheap equipment, you'll love this story about the Canon G10 matching the results of a $40,000 rig:

David, I'm a fan of your site and Nick's site also looks pretty interesting.
However as a female photo assistant and photographer I find the "no female assistants holding long poles" line a bit offensive [and as a female working in photography, its pretty hard to offend me].
We already work in an industry where its still ok for a photographer to openly not hire females for the simple fact that we are female, little snarks like that just add to the impression that we are somehow not there as professionals but as amusing accessories.
