Eat Your Heart Out, "Ray Flash"
For a moment, light is taking a back seat to creativity. Strobist reader Cohophoto whipped this DIY Steampunk Ray Gun up out of parts from old radios and cameras. The closer you look at this thing, the better it looks, too. It's just so off-the-scale cool, I don't care how he lit it.
But you can see the lighting setup shot (and a link to the set of assembly photos) inside.
__________

In the end, he used HDR and some heavy burning along with the lighting. But again, I frankly do not care. This thing is just too flippin' sweet not to run.
I want one.

A beautiful creation! I've been thinking of rigging together some steampunk props with old camera gear, and this is a major inspiration!
What do you call those accordian devices holding the softboxes from the ceiling? How do they move? Are they on rails?
My first thought was "What will the TSA say about this little gem?"
Alex,
Bogen calls them pantographs, Foba calls 'em scissors.

Great shot, and everyone should check out the Flickr photos to see the 'how-to' build your own! :)

Those things hanging down holding the softboxes are pantographs; I have ones from the Italian firm Tre-D; I can't reccommend them enough; they're a godsend.
They are fixed on ceiling rails; so can be placed almost anywhere in the studio.
Hope this helps,
JF
Wow this looks amazing - it's great to see the old fashioned valves being put to use.
This could be on every grown ups wish list to Santa this year :-)

Thats pretty sweet. The image looks great but the time to build that gun is really impressive. Great attention to detail.
What does it do?
Haha the lighting is just so freaking appealing in this photo its not even funny. It must be the hanging lightstands:P
I saw this a few weeks back and thought it was great. Good to see some recognition here.
I've been trying to hook up with some Steampunk folks in Arizona because I think the genre really lends itself to what could be great photographs with moody lighting.
HI there,
Interesting the pantographs but the prices are crazy!
I was going to set up somthing similar in my studio. The rails can be bought easily as rails for closet or garage doors. The pantographs can be replaced be aluminium bars hanging from the ceiling and the lights have to be clamped to those bars. To get the light higher/loer you have to reclamp them but that is all.
Cheers

I agree the subject matter is cool, but hey, love that lighting kit! Thanks for sharing the photo of how it was done!
