How Niche is the Web? This Niche:

[UPDATE: The site has clearly started to catch on, with A-listers among those dropping in their tests. Excellent!]
__________

A new site dedicated to photo assistants' uploaded lighting tests. Not sure whether to roll my eyes, or RSS it.

(Who am I kidding -- I'm gonna RSS it. I love this kind of stuff.)

Funny thing is... a few of my lighting tests have turned out to be great shots in their own right.

OT - good to see you out at the Patapsco M&G Sunday David. Hope you got some great Test Shots. ;)

I love it! More creativity and snark than they are allowed in the "for real" photos... Much more interesting than the sort of thing we see 24/7/365 in the media.

Some perfect looking dude posing in front of a backlit flag? Boooring. Crew member doing a send-up of the whole backlit American flag thing? Awesome.

Model posing on neutral background with perfect light... shrug. Model attempting to lick the white balance card? Hilarious!

RSS it is. If for no other reason than things like blue shoes. We're so busy thinking about gobos, and 18% gray wall paint, and key-light modification, and 1/2 CTO.

I could probably upload 20 tests right now, but I gotta dig'em up.

My assistant is HILARIOUS in light tests...I'm glad there's a place to post them!

This is absolutely cool, nothing to do with "Look mom, I helped"!
Having assisted for years I can tell you that many "photographers" dont have a clue about lighting or just trust their assistant to set up the right light for them.
Dont underestimate assistants.

The whole idea of this site, for people who dont understant, is that assistants tend to shoot a couple of test shots after setting up the light for a shoot.
Many times holding a grey scale or Macbeth color checker for color balancing the shot.

Site claims to resize pics to 720px or so, but on my screen they are mostly huge original sizes. It's a pain to navigate. Anyone else have this problem?

I love that website. I just discovered it yesterday in an e-mail from a friend. I am a photo assistant and can tell you we have some crazy light-test photos. I finally have a use for some of these photos.

Great stuff, and probably a dozen times more interesting and creative than the "real" shots that ended up getting published in a magazine or on the web.

One stylistic thing that I noticed: What the heck is up with all of the overly "high pass filter" and/or "unsharp mask" treated images? That look is sooooo 2007/2008.

I can see this turning into a tongue in cheek competition to produce exponentially more ridiculous test frames... going to keep an eye on this.

Oh god I hope some of the photographers I've worked with don't find this. They have A LOT of embarrassing images of my goofing in front of the camera.

I always figured part of my job as an assistant was to brighten my photographer's day. I often did so at the expense of my dignity...
