Gone Fishin'
Lotsa Q's via the comments on the RP JrX's. Keep 'em coming and I will answer as many as is practical later this week in a QnA post. But as of this morning, the girls are in NYC until Thursday. Which leaves Ben, 8, and yours truly home by ourselves.
IN: Go karts, laser tag, pizza, movies and the increased likelihood of a farting contest.
OUT: Bed making, writing posts, answering emails and putting the seat down.
See you later this week.

David - take a well deserved break and have fun with your son!
Enjoy, bro. You and Ben need that the respite from the girls ;-)
I'll take you guys on in the farting contest.
Ah yes, the important things in life...don't forget the action movie and popcorn...
Sounds like good times...ENJOY!
David - enjoy the time you have with Ben, make some memories.

Remove IR filter + farting contest = new frontier in photography?
DH, Glad to see you have your priorities straight...
Awesome. I have three boys myself, only getting left home with Mom isn't quite the same as getting left home with Dad. Enjoy!!
Good for you (and your son) David! It's nice to have a break from being "proper" around the girls isn't it?
That sounds like a great time. Played laser tag on my last visit to the US. It is forbidden here in Germany. As usual by people who never played it.
This is a photography site about lighting, if you are going to have farting contests might as well do 'em in the dark over a match and capture the event for your admiring wife to view.....she'll never leave you alone again.
No need to post the photographic results (please don't) but a written report would be instructive.
Usually not anonymous but I think I'd better be on this one (don't want to get dumped on...LOL), have fun. and guys really do regress when the women leave.......
since you no longer accept direct emails, I'll pose this request here (and since there are only 13 posts so far, perhaps it won't get lost in the shuffle). I have Strobist as one of my daily tabs. It has helped me tons. My request: When you take these pictures and post examples, would it be possible to maybe include your technical info? So often I'm trying to duplicate the technique and not really sure where to start. Ap, speed, ISO... which lens are you using, etc... I know I'd super-duper appreciate it. Thanks. If this isn't possible, I'll still come to Strobist.com every day... Thanks D.
Which begs the questions...
"How would David Hobby light a fart?"
great post, have a fun few mandays!
I live in a house full of girls, all of which can put men to shame when it comes to farting.
If I had the house to myself, to be honest, I'd be grateful of the fresh air.
I'm surprised the strobist community hasn't explored the virtues of smoke and haze to go with gelled up strobes, considering we like to do things on the cheap...I mean, how much is a can of beans?
Don't forget to eat Easy Cheese directly from the can!!!
hey, i have been readiing for about 2 years and love the sight. i need to know if there is a way to not make the SB-800 beep when its ready to fire off again. i am a navy shooter, and a lot if the things i shoot need to be quiet (nothing cool, just boring meetings and stuff) if there is a way i can mod the thing to just shut up that would be awesome! thanks
Robb,
You were not the first one to ask this.
refer to this:

it`s a post back from 2008 when DH explained why he doesn`t actually care (and we shouldn`t too!) about the exif tech info.
And I can say it indeed is better, after you get used to it, because you can start looking how the picture looks, instead of keeping a ton of numbers and formulas in our head.
As for a lens to start, I started with a very cheap canon 50mm 1.8 (nikon has one too). Now i thought about buying something better and more expensive, but the fact is this lens is among the best image quality and sharpness out there when you go to f/2.8, so I don`t really want to pay more to have almost the same quality.
Another tip is to research your lens' sharpness vs. aperture curves, so you can always use your lens` sweet spot.
If you have more questions look for me in flickr.com/tondello
wish you good photos..
"guys really do regress when the women leave......."
Which is why God created woman. LOL, just kidding (maybe). Have a blast, uh, but that doesnt mean blow anything up!
try to click the baked beans' photo.
DH always hides easter eggs in his posts' photos. I'm always sure to check'em.
When the cat's away, the boys go crazy!
Dave (this is not for posting, but for you personally). I am hosting an 8-day Wilderness safari to Botswana and Zambia in 2011 for a maximum of 8 people, including myself and the guide. If you have any interest:

Probably be in June/July/August. I am still firming up dates.
Don't forget, you don't have to put the muffler on burps either....just don't forget to put it back on when mama gets back. Thanks!
I like those priorities. Good for you both.
I was wondering what sort of lighting do you suggest for the farting comp? I take it hot lights might not be the best
You forgot "play in the rain". It is especially fun when mixed with riding go carts. Power slides around the corners! Fast and Furious here we come.
Did anyone check out the ad at the bottom of the screen? It was an ad for a book called, "On Camera Flash." I can't possibly think of a worse ad to place on the strobist sight!
I can hear my childhood friends back in the day saying "pressurizing to maximum capacity!!! 10..9..8...." Enjoy the vac!!!
Don't forget to have a glowing Mountain Dew bottle:

The fun thing: The guy writes "DAVID" with the glowing liquid....
Fanboy revealed!
AWESOME! Have a great time blazing some saddles, so to speak! ;)
Go karts, go karts?!? Where oh where did you find a track around here?
And definitely some pics of the farting contest!
Where, oh where did you find go-karts around here? A track?
Oh, and definitely some pics of the farting contest(s)!
Don't worget the most important father-son activity there is: teaching him to enjoy the genius of the Three Stooges.
:D
I think go-karts and laser tag should be incorporated into all strobist meet-ups from here on in.
David - enjoy spending some time with your son! You've earned it.
Women fart too, ya know. It just smells like pot pourri.
Ah! I love this post! Have a fabulous fart filled weekend!
It feels kinda wierd but man im jealous on Ben! my dad never challenged me in farting contests and gokart :P
Have fun guys!
Sounds like an amazing weekend!
I need one of those!
Passport Foodie
AS a mother of two, I am so proud of your professional sacrifices...true love. Now...the hard part...put the camera down..my children say "wow mommy, you do love us more than your camera." Yikes.
LOL! You sound like a really cool dad!
Trader Joe's is King.....I wish we had them in Canada.
You are my hero.
Well, I just ordered a JrX transmitter and 4 studio JrX receivers.
I wasn't sure whether or not the high speed sync would translate to nearby strobes via optical slaving, so I didn't want to risk them going out of stock and just bought one for each of my Bees.
Perhaps David can answer that, or I'll post my findings next week.
Care to do a review of the new "Horseman VCC Pro" when your back?

Nice, the finer things in life. ;-)
I'm also guessing there was no laundrey or dish washing?
Nothing like a good ol "mancation" to put things in perspective.
Awesome. I'm feeling like one of those myself.

Which begs the questions...

With a PW'd candle, I guess.
