FYI: DIY RPCube PDQ

Do you have one of those new RadioPopper JrX "Studio" model receivers? Tired of waiting for the upcoming RPCube, so you can remotely control Nikon flash power levels?

There is a lively discussion on how to roll your own (pretty easily and cheaply) happening in the Strobist Flickr group discussion board.

All you need is an SC-17 or a multi-flash sync cord (or generic equivalents of either) and a stereo miniplug. (And just one $10.50 multi-flash cord will make two "cubes".)

Oh it's that easy is it? I am seeing already the possibility of feeding the quench signal into a pulse stretcher, driving a super bright red LED, and aiming that at the auto-exposure photodiode on your choice of auto flash...

Looks good. Looks like even I could do this DIY project.

Unfortunately I'm actually still waiting for the RP JrX's to become available in Europe :-( (Netherlands here).

(Thinking about maybe ordering them via someone who lives overseas in the US...)

Hello all,

I did the same thing with the AS-E900 adapters that are way cheaper. (I bought 3 of them for $4/each.)

I you wish, you can check it out here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157622201266593/

@Wibo

Try MyUS.com , you can have it shipped to them and then they will ship it to you. It doesn't look like it's too expensive and it saves you having to wait.

So does this mean that with the JrX, *ANY* TTL capable flash is now Strobist-friendly??

(Ok, zoom is still a good thing to have...)

I work at a small indie-owned camera shop in Upstate NY. I refer someone to this site at least once a week, and respect it entirely for all of its content and value as far as a resource of knowledge goes.

I gotta say tho, the little guys like us are dying, and I know it's hard to find a local camera shop in lots of areas. But is there any chance you could recommend "For part such and such, check your local camera shop, and if not, online." We carry a lot of the things required to do this kind of photo work, and would love to better support this kind of grass-roots methodology, but we can't help people if people can't help us. The less we sell, the less likely we'll be around in a year.

I still love Strobist, but I love my job too, and I want to keep it, and help other people do these kinds of things. Please try to figure out a way to encourage shout-outs to small businesses, and the web as a secondary resource. Thanks and keep up the amazing work! -peter
