Hot off the Presses: Strobist OCF Magnets

With apologies to the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, the Oregon Country Fair, the Ohio Football Club and the Olympic Credit Fund (among many others) the Strobist "OCF" magnets are now available.
The OCF stands for Off Camera Flash. Yeah, it's a little Dan Brown-ish. But we thought a rather fitting three-letter airport code thingie, all things considered.
They are not for sale -- but there are several ways in which you can score one for free. Deets inside.
__________
The Plan
Earlier this summer, I was looking for a way to have a little fun with part of my budget. Long story short, I dropped a thousand bucks on just over 75 pounds worth of Euro-style "oval" magnets.
Main reasoning being, "Why not?"
Being long on impulse and short on detailed follow-through, the hard part would now be to figure out how to get them out to people.
Sweatshop Ben and Emily, Inc., serving as order fulfillment?
Nope. We can't even get them to clean their rooms.
SASE's coming to the house for the next year from all over the globe?
Um, no.
So I thought it much easier (and way more fun) to just give them away. I divided the lot into five sections and we are scattering them to the winds.
How to Get One
There are three ways to score one, and all are free. (And only one way requires a purchase of any kind.)
The easiest way -- and the way in which you have the best chance -- is to make any purchase from Midwest Photo Exchange. (While supplies last -- and I would not wait too long on this option.)
They have been an incredible supporter of the site and all that goes on here, so I wanted to say thanks to the people who support them.
MPEX has even created several new products specifically for the readers of this site. So the path of least magnetic resistance goes to those of you who are supporting them -- and, by extension, the site itself. And thanks, by the way.
[UPDATE: Getting reports that MPEX may be out, as of 10/5/09. Please call to check, if the mag is important to you!]
While supplies last (and they got a pile of them) type in OCF as a promotional code at checkout on any purchase. Check your list of items to make sure it took. It should be cryptically obvious.
Another Way
The second easiest way to get one for free is a cakewalk, if you happen to attend Photo Plus Expo this October in New York. They will be available -- but not visible -- in at least three booths. There will be a code word involved, 'cause we don't want these going to just anybody with a fridge or a car to accessorize, right?
More on that later, when we get closer to Photo Plus.
The Most Challenging Way
View Strobist OCF Magnet locations in a larger map
I (as well as a certain number of people on my behalf) am simply going to start leaving them in publicly accessible locations. Obviously, the Baltimore-Washington corridor is gonna get some love because that is home base for me. But I travel a fair bit too. In fact, I have two trips planned within the next two weeks, and I will be leaving a trail of
There are people helping from around the country and the globe, too. So the magnets could show up literally anywhere. How will you know when a magnet has been placed somewhere in your area?
That's easy. I'll tweet it on Twitter -- specific location and all. And if whoever finds it first sends me an "@strobist" tweet, I also will let people know that it has been found. So if you want to get OCF updates make sure to follow @Strobist on Twitter.
It is free and easy, and there are a whole bunch of cool photog-types there worth following. More on that later.
My goal here is to really spread these things around the world and see what happens. I have some ideas, and this will be an ongoing project with some cool surprises.
One Last Thing
There are exactly 1,000 magnets (assuming we do not repeat it) to be dispersed about the entire planet. Which means that there is a pretty small chance you will ever see another one on someone else's car.
If you ever see one, please don't be a jerk and steal it. Seriously, that would be so counter to the whole thing.
But just to let them know you could have easily stolen it, turn it upside down. You keep the good karma and they get a little creeped out.
This should be lots of fun, depending on where we can get the magnets dispersed to. And for those of you who choose to support the site's sponsors as a way of getting yours, many thanks. You make this whole thing happen.

Very cool! Too bad my last couple Midwest purchases didn't score one... Oh Well! When do we get a seminar in the Balto/DC area?
Philly! ... and I would be glad to be a "spreader".

Is there a way to have a password for those of us who live in Columbus and don't order online, but go and purchase in-store?
@Frank-
Good question. I'd call 'em on Monday and ask. They're prolly watching the USC game right now . . .
Balls my cars bodywork is plastic! OCF magnet Fail!
Berlin Germany, PLEASE!!! OCF FOR EVER!!!
Glad I've been procrastinating on getting the new gel set... now hopefully I'll get the OCF mag too! Just ordered the kit and OCF; now I need to fight the urge to go check the mailbox immediately.
Now, i'm more excited to go to Photo Plus Expo! :)
Cryptically awesome! Very cool idea!
I say you come to Valparaiso, IN....I'll even throw in dinner!
I bet you thought I was going to suggest Albuquerque, New Mexico. Well, right you are!
Seattle Da%& It!!! And thanks!
I have placed my order. Interested to see how long my OCF magnet stays right side up in Michigan
Thats very funny...you were not kidding on the cryptic but obvious!
As a note: I specifically made my first purchase at Midwest to get the magnet. It was something I was pondering for a while though.
How long will it take to have my OCF magnet rotated upside down in Michigan..My order has been placed.
drat! I purchased the Strobist pack from Midwest and just received the gels but i didn't get a magnet.
Springfield, Virginia!
this is such a cool idea. I will probably order somthing from mpex just because but this is a nice incentive. If you want some spread around GA I would be more than happy to (thought you will proabaly get @zarias to do it). I will be in maryland in october so that would save on shipping.
David, I'll happily be a spreader in Western Australia. There is sure to be a fair few Strobist readers about.
happy to distribute some in Melbourne Australia and possibly Sydney as i have a friend or two up there who could be into this ...

If you're heading south again by vehicle, leave one in or near the rest area on I-95 near the South Carolina 136(?) mile marker in Sumter County. I patrol that area of our county and would love to stick it on my patrol vehicle. (At least long enough to get a pic, then policy would dictate I remove it.)
If you want a couple put out around SC, midlands or coast, I'll meet with you and put them out on my days off when travelling.
I would love to see a few pop up in Tulsa.
Hey David, No love for the strobists in India? :-(
Salt Lake.
David, are you going to be at Photoshop World West later this month? I doubt you will ever come to my town unless you head thur it to White Sands Monument or head to the Space museum. So I got to place an order from MPEX. If you do come here let me know and I will assist and drive you around. Why aren't you teaching at PSW?
I'd like to put in a bid for Arizona as we have a pretty good group out here (and I think the most active are already following @strobist).
Thanks,
carlos
oops I forgot to Name the my location. Alamogordo New Mexico. I can take you out to WSM, my treat. and take you around some of the historical sites in southern NM. My other idea is to do some of these that stick to the inside of the rear windows or at least put up a link to the full size graphic so we can print them out and stick them ourselves.
Wouldn't you know. I just ordered my starving student lighting kit from MPEX yesterday!
You guys ROCK !
I LOVE the OCF magnet idea, please come to Miami?? PLZZ ?? =)
I'll be in NYC for Photo Plus Expo, though. I wanna my magnet ! ;-)
Great idea! I know you're going to be on the Left Coast next week, any chance of heading down to San Diego? Oh and there's definitely a bar where you can watch that Gator game here in sunny SD. :-)
Cheers.
Thanks David, I've been procrastinating about some things I needed to order from MPEX. Order finally placed tonight.
Not a good day for NCAA football fans in Ohio, but a great day in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Go Blue!
OCF magnets are a great idea...no Miami or New York, but love to see some in Guelph, Ontario and will be happy to spread some too!!
These are rad. I've actually been to the Oregon County Fair. It was....um....something I'll never forget (and never fully remember).
Copenhagen, Denmark. Feel free to send me a bunch and I'll distribute them, at the next strobist meetup - or randomly around town...
Bangkok, Thailand!
Any vacations planned around here?
Nice idea!
But too bad that on the bottom of the comments we find an ad for a book about ON-Camera-Flash, which unfortunately is also OCF... ;-)
Hamburg, Germany
Great idea, but unfortunately counts me out. [I can't even get Midwest to reply to my emails asking for quotes on international freight]. But I'll certainly be keeping my eyes open in case I spot one Down Under. ;)
Budapest please!!!
(I live here)

He, fun!
I can offer Cologne and/or Bonn. Germany David.
Kind regards,

I hope I see one, so I can turn it upside down! Hahaha, so much fun! =D
Sweet! MPEX ships to Germany :D
Hmm? Seattle Tweet Tweet......Oh Yeah!
I'd so like to see them in Groningen, The Netherlands! It's in the north of The Netherlands, and these sort of thing never reach our city, because it's at the other side of the country then where Schiphol(airport) is.
Anyhow, cool to see how this thing will work out.

just ordered a gel pack from midwest. really hope supplies have lasted the 10 hours since the post
Ottawa, Canada! I would be happy to disperse a few.
AUSTRALIA PLEASE!!!
I've already spent $1500 at MPX last year! :)
I'd be happy to spread some for you in Photo Town (Rochester, NY).
I dont suppose you will be dropping any in the UK around me are you ? I would guess not :)
Very interesting project.
How about Newcastle, NSW, Australia?
Any chance to see a few of these landing in London ? That would be totally awesome ... Very nice idea by the way.
Hoping for some Niagara Region, Canada, love :)
Have you ever been up to see the Niagara Falls and such David? Should really come for a visit some time.
David- Make sure everyone posts photos of their magnets in exotic locations, and as a suggestion, the most creative can compete for some sort of reward.
Me, I'm taking advantage of the JetBlue all-you-can-fly for $599 deal, so from Sept 8-Oct 8 I'll be all over the place with an eye out for them. Will post pics of any I see...
Uh-oh! I think it's going to get even more crowded at the Photo Plus Expo now!
Norway could use a few of these. I'd be happy to hand out a few ;)
-Erik
Madison, WI, please! Lots of Strobist love here!
I'd help to spread it in sunny Singapore!!
Oh nice! Too bad I just ordered the new gels a week ago...
Anyway; Linköping, Sweden would like some attention! :)
How about some for Florida Gators down here in Gainesville? Lots of winning teams to go with your winning website.
Any change for someone in Costa Rica... ???? Please.
Salt Lake City UT
BOSTON.
Great idea! Let's get Florida covered, of course!
Orlando.

Los Angeles here! Mine is on the way from mpex, but I'd be happy to give some out at our next meetup in Oct.
You, sir, are an evil genius! ;)
So unless you live in USA you don't stand a chance of getting one - yeah brill idea!
Yo, Princess. Did you actually *read* the post?
:)
I apologize, if we are lucky there might be 250 spread round the rest of the world as I won't be in NY for the at the Photo Plus Expo and with Int freight and our Tax I it's way to expensive to order from MPEX.
Why not give 15 to The Flash Center, for their customers, that supports Strobists just as much as MPEX does.
PS I will be first in the queue when you visit on the 8th Dec to get mine.
:-P
FYI all, photoplus in NYC is free,
no code necessary. just sign up, and choose "expo only"
of course you coooooould register for some classes.......

See you all there!

I did read but still ain't sure how to get one here to Costa Rica...
Now I knew there was a good reason I kept putting off that order for my Lumiquest softbox and Honl grid from MPEX! No more procrastinating here...
I always wanted to meet david @ photoplus, but if i wanted to take a picture with him, would he be insulted if i used onboard Flash? i cant sleep at night thinking of the awkwardness of the situation! david said he wont be with us there, but any suggestions? I'm not shlepping an umbrella to The Javits Center!!!
Advice please?! Help me sleep!
-Josh
I snagged the mag from the first location you posted - really didn't expect it to still be there!

I could spread OCF verb here in Italy, Milan and Florence... So please let me know! Thanx for share! Dan
Many European strobists here (like me) would love to get their hands on the mag, but there is no practical way of doing so, other than SASE. Please reserve some.
Again, if you are volunteering to place some magnets in parts interesting around the world, please note it in a comment preceeded by the words, "DO NOT PUBLISH".
And include your

How can I get a OCF magnet to Australia?
Very keen to have one on public display here.

Cool idea. I'm looking forward to turning a few upside down. Just submitted my mpex order and now have my own Ohio Cranberry Foundation signet on the way. Look for it in Seattle!
Just purchased some stuff from Midwest and am receiving an official insignia of the Ohio Cranberry Foundation!
I'll be real mad if that really turns out to be... well... THAT!
Just placed my order from MPEX, Yay! OCF Magnets
I will probably be using the easiest avenue for this. I want to buy that new gel set too, so it is perfect. However, it would be totally cool to see some float by LITTLE ROCK, AR. ¡¡¡¡¡OCF!!!!!
@David
Have you heard of GeoCaching. This is almost the same thing! you could use these for geocaches!
Just ordered my long-awaited gel pack and looking forward to the OCF magnet. What a fun idea!
Dang.. I placed my order at Midwest friday.. thinking about cancelling my order and reordering to get the magnet haha
Very cool!
Kanagawa Japan,
Very cool!

No password necessary, just ask!
@Circlew: Stop by and see us as PSW. Probably won't have the mags, but I always have something special set aside for my Strobist's at tradeshows.
Stop by and see us at Photo Expo also! We'll have goodies there as well.
@morgana Creely: Guessing there may be some junk mail issues going on. Send me an email direct moishe @ mpex . com or Twitter DM: midwestphotoex or flickrmail: midwestphotoexchange
We have 320 left at the time of this post.
Dude I was just at Midwest LAST WEEK! Dropped 3k in the past two months their easy. Just emailed Ferdinand, I gotta get one... :)
Hey david, you ever in the Newark/Wilmington, DE area? You should leave one around here somewhere.
mpex, will do
David:
Send one (or a couple) overseas to some of the soldiers who follow the blog. How cool would "OCF" be on a Humvee??? Or a TANK! Now THAT's a VAL to be proud of!
Barry
Ordered the gel pack and speed straps from MPEX, and entered the code, however the line item on the invoice reads: Official Signet of the Ohio Cranberry Foundation. Hope that is the same as the magnet from the post.
Well darn! I bought my two packs of Roscoe Stobist Gel packs a week to early.
And for the next batch I propose (stickers) for a only we will see the magnet in the fridge and on the back of a car, some rip-off artist will just pill it off. I know I am, as soon as I see one, on a lonely car, in dark and gloomy parking lot. Heh Heh Heh or I’ll just buy one, Yeah, buy one.
@Barry: Active duty, call or email...will ship to APO.
Worried about quantity? Are you kidding? Friends in Hong Kong have already pumped out 112,000 pirated versions and are selling them (a la hotcakes) to unsuspecting photo-tourists!
Yup, hotter commodity than a LV leather purse!
Woot! My OCF magnet is on it's way!!!
My magnet is riding in style on my CTS in Michigan. But is has been on a full day and is not upside down!
My magnet arrived yesterday, and today I found it upside down! That made me laugh, and look over my shoulder. lol
Fetched successfully around 1am.
My Adventure:
1. Was getting ready to go hang out with a friend and his really hot neighbor for some beers, when I decided to check the twitter page. I
knew there was a trip to Seattle this weekend and had followed the tweets throughout the day, so I knew David was enroute. I was gearing
up to spring to action this weekend. Lo and behold, there was a magnet placed outside a downtown hotel around 9-ish. Holy crap! So,
what are the chances - cause it was about midnight by now, and I'm in Seattle with lots of Strobists? Now, the decision process went like
this: hang out with my buddy and a hot lady whose actually really cool to me, which says alot 'cause I'm kinda creepy looking, but what
artist isn't, (As an aside, I've been asked to leave churches(2 times) because someone thought I was loitering, when in fact my daughter
was performing with a choir group, and I was just standing around before the show minding my own business) OR make a b-line from lower
Queen Anne, down the piers, and up to Seneca & 4th. Hmm, hottie or OCF magnet? OCF it is - he|| yeah!!! But the magnet was placed hours
ago. What the H. I'm going!
2. Broke some laws and got up to 4th & Seneca. Broke some more and illegally parked. I could see the magnet from across the street. Got
out and j-walked to the USA Today thingy where the magent was placed. If a tow truck or the Fuzz showed up, then I'd run like H back to
the car. I was convinced another Strobist would pop out of nowhere as I reached for the magnet.
3. Holy crap again, it was in my hands! Couldn't believe it. I thought for sure David's weekend in Seattle would equate to me running
all over the place in continual dissapointment as my gallopy guzzled my money.
4. Took some pics and have tried to post. Don't get too critical please. I'm a late bloomer to Strobist. Although I've read a ton of
the content I'm only on Lighting 102 - 1.2 - Position/Distance.
5. I wanted to say thanks to David, and decided to leave a note at his hotel lobby. But, I either forgot which hotel he said he was
staying at, or he didn't say which hotel he was staying at. No bother, I left messages at the front desks of all the hotels around there.
And, like the church story mentioned above - the front desk people appeared more inclined to kick me out, then honor my request - hehe.
Lessons Learned:
1. Hotties are great, but magnets are greater - YEAH!
2. Sometimes it actually pays to be a night owl.
3. Being a low hours web contractor can have its benefits.
4. I'm not a loser. I'm a winner!
5. The only metal part of the exterior of a Saturn is the gas cap door. So that's where the magnet's going. Saturns(uh-hem).
Warm and Fuzzy Crap or a Heavy Dose of Cheese or Both:
1. Gotta admit, that was good clean fun. I haven't been excited or had such a fun rush in quite a while. Yeah, might be lame, oh well -
I have a magnet!
2. If your in lower Queen Anne, and see a piece of crap, dark green Saturn with paint peeling off the hood(fear not, I have expensive
photo gear), then check the gas cap door and give the OCF a flip. :)
3. Great excuse to create a twitter account. Although, I'll probably never use it.
4. When I buy the Strobist Rosco filters, I won't use the code for the magnet, so someone else has a chance.
5. David, I know you were looking for a pub to drink beers during the football game on the 19th. Did you find one? Althought I don't
like football, I'd really like to have some beers with you and fellow Seattle Strobists. Are you going to tweet the location???
@strobist Fetched successfully around 1am. Thanks David! http://twitpic.com/i5iqu ...don't get this twitter thing yet
http://twitter.com/currenthru
Mine should be in the MPEX package that arrived today. I posted about the Ohio Cranberry Foundation on www.thephotoforum.com and Moishe posted in my thread. I'm wondering if the cowboys and indians will ever see the light of day...
Weee... got my magnet today!
my mpex order just shipped and i didn't see this post in time. I guess I will be magnetless...
Thursday 2009.09.24 12:24 pm I picked up the one in Penn Station in Baltimore.
haven't figured out the tooter thing yet...
Here's a little snap of mine. Ordered a few Nikon parts via MPEX.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31613248&l=dc0bf4d7a3&id=59001162
Finally got mine from MPEX last week!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevehayward/3974857391/
Mpex must be out. I got my package in the mail, yet no magnet was inside. :(
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I hesitated to put mine on my car I'm a bit concerned about this being a beacon, saying "Hey, there might be expensive photo gear in here!" Granted, the hypothetical bad-guy would need to put two and two together... Well, just hoping this doesn't come back to bite anyone in the back[lighting].
I got one in the Netherlands. Didn't know until now it's one of 1000. Found it in a shop and just asked for it and got it.
I got to PDN Photo East on Thursday Oct 22nd at 11am and headed straight to the Lumiquest Booth. Embarrassed myself with the Grey Pupon secret handshake and snagged one of the first OCF magnets. The woman at the booth said they were very rare and they needed to ration them for the poor souls who couldn't make the show until Saturday. Now the big question, where to stick it?
V-285's 4ever
My contribution - inspired by you I designed a simple sketch of the OCF logo (it's free - "good for carma"). In case you want to look at it please advise where to e-mail. Best.
Hi
can you send me one for me in France ?
Does anyone know how I can get one when a Dutchie.
You Americans get all the good stuff ;)
Hubby and I got ours in Nashville. YAY!!!
