OLDC: More Fun than Diagramming Sentences

Not everyone has access to their own in-house team of professional illustrators to create stunningly beautiful lighting diagrams.

For those of you who have not been following the Flickr threads, Strobist reader Quoc Huy Nguyen Dinh has been developing an online lighting diagram creator, and it is ready for prime time. You can either do it on-the-fly in the browser-based version, or download a Photoshop file to get serious on your desktop.

And best of all, it's free.

(Check it out here.)

I love this man. Honestly - The more people do thing like this the better off this community will be.

Please accept a heart felt "Thank you" from over here in the UK.

If folks are trying this out and using IE8, be sure to click on the Compatibility button next to the URL field at the top of the browser. This will reload the page and allow you to move the various camera/flash/bg icons onto the worksheet.

this is pretty awesome! i find online version much simpler and easier to use than the photoshop version... maybe it could be different if i play with it a little bit more.

Diagrams for Everyone. Awesome. Can't wait to get a good look at this. Seems like it is not only helpful for sharing, but it should also be helpful in pre-production and visualization.

Hummm? I wonder? Can this solve our little problem in flickr? Could flickr allow this as an enbedded object with a photo file. Just a thought.

I kinda like the hand-made, scribbled versions. In this increasingly digital world, it's a refreshingly human touch. :o)

Does this mean that we will not see any more of Mcnally's numnuts diagrams?

It seems like a great tool but is it really any better than the photoshop one that Kevin Kertz made? I've been using his for a over a year now, the link is bottom middle of his page.

I'll have to play with this one and see, it does look like you need to be online to use it, which would be a distinct disadvantage for me.

Hey David,

Thanks for the post to the tool. Very much appreciated!

I'm glad you guys all like the tool. It is warming up my heart to see lot of support and give me more motivation to continue the development.

Thanks for the comment for bugs especially the IE related ones. Thanks John Mathieu for the IE8 tip. Will put a notice on the page.

@Ian & Darrell, maybe an online numnuts diagram creator? Where is the scanner?! :-D

this online app is a nice and easy one to use, but I think it may also be worthwhile to mention that a similar tool for photoshop was developed and made available by kevin kertz in 2006.

i would say that this one looks very similar and uses a lot of identical items.

it was also highlighted in this strobist post

Kevin's TOS prohibit any commercial use, which can get gray with blogs; photogs' websites. Huy does not restrict. But yes, we have talked about Kevin's before.

Gotta correct you on one small, but important detail...it's the Oregon COUNTRY Fair, not county fair. It's a big difference you should really see for yourself! And don't forget the camera!

Inspired me to work on a 3D lighting diagram system using Google Sketchup. I'll be posting more about it as I get it working better (first, had to learn to use SketchUp which is tough for old dogs ...)
