"Donner, Party of Four, Please…"
We are snowbound here at Strobist World Headquarters, 14 inches into a forecast two feet of snow. The whole Mideast Atlantic is getting pummeled. I'm an indoor cat today, not at all missing the mandatory snow art assignment at The Sun.
We are (I hope) sufficiently stocked up on food, and cracking the occasional "Modest Proposal" sub-reference around the kids. They remain clueless as to why we think that's funny.
Happy to be snuggled up near the fire and working on an OA post for next week. If you are traveling -- in any form -- on the East Coast today, please do so carefully.

As a South African living in New Zealand I have no experience of the weather you're obviously enjoying. As the year draws to a close, I think it apt at this point to say a very necessary "thank you" for the effort you put into your blog. I'm sure there are tons of photographers who know what they know because of the generosity of people such as yourself. Have a very peaceful and blessed Christmas season.
I'm just glad to know people outside of California know about the Donner Party. I go snowshoeing and do photo walks up there regularly -- it's a good reality check to remember what can happen when you aren't prepared for what nature can dish out.
I join myself to the previous comment. Thank you very much for all this knowledge you share with us.
Snowy weather here (in France) too... Too bad I did not read your advice *before* I broke my car yesterday :)
Enjoying the snow here in West Virginia as well, and it's good not to have a reason to venture out - you know, like a "real job" calling me out to shoot snow on a Saturday. I have to wonder what would happen if everyone who was supposed to work took the advice of the Emergency Managers who say "stay home unless it's an emergency." Are cheesy news photos (no better than what people are posting to Facebook today) important enough to be an emergency?
Mike
The same weather in Belgium. Yes, be careful also :-)

Indeed.
But remember that everything they were *going* to shoot today has been canceled, and a newspaper still has to go out tomorrow.
And today, with the web, it is more about quantity than quality. A 50-photo gallery of Facebook-quality photos makes the publisher squeal with glee, as it will get more total pageviews than one outstanding A-1 lede photo.
Economics are forcing the machine to change, and not always for the better.
Ha! The "Modest Proposal" reference was LOL funny. Didn't realize the Hobby children were Irish ;->
Interesting tangent —
There is a statue nearby at Indiana University called "Ugolino and his Sons" by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The story goes that the family was imprisoned, and as they starve to death, the children beg the father to eat them so he will stay alive.
Hide the BBQ sauce before reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugolino_della_Gherardesca .
Love the blog. Happy holidays :)
Hi, David Happy Xmas,
Well here in the UK we have had 2 inches of snow, it has turned into a National Disaster!
I spent some time in the south atlantic on a photo assignment just of the coast of Antartica photographing penguins, one of the most dangerous frozen environments on the planet.
then today in 2 inch of snow I fell like a sack of potatoes, I feel such a idiot. I forgot snow is a great leveller.
Been out in the garden trying to get as much stuff to shoot as possible. Strobing of the snow bouncing it all over the place.
To all the guys out there in the snow be safe,
Rich

Went sledding in Wyman dell today great fun!
A Modest Proposal
Q - Do you like children?
A - Yes, I think they are delicious.
Well for once you guys down in DC area really have an excuse not to go to work....
Up here in Mass no 14+ would stop us from going out for a normal day of work....just turn on the ol snow thrower ...matter of fact...how do you like being a Homeowner now Dave?...LOL
I hope you enjoyed the day with the kids
Snowblowers are for wimps. We dug out by hand -- 20" and a pretty long driveway. Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go get some more Ben Gay.
I lvo ethe "Modest Proposal" suggestion. That is one of the only short essays I still occasionally reference from my lit courses back in high school. But after shoveling for four hours yesterday, I'm surprised I never thought of dropping some references. I'll have to make sure to drop a few today.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods...
Snow? You just need a Subaru, David
