Out Standing In Their Field
A little Monday morning fun, courtesy the London Strobist Meetup Group. If you are in London and looking for some interesting folks to shoot with, give them a shout and find out when their next meetup will be.One of countless homages to the original photo by Joe Rosenthal, I still love this one. Honestly, sometimes it amazes me what this website has spawned. And of course, click the pic if you want lighting info for the flashes you can't see in the frame.
__________
Couple of quick notes on the original, which was of course a bit more serious:
First, Rosenthal's photo, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, was the most published photo in the world until it was eclipsed in a single day by Bruce Weaver's shot of the Challenger explosion.
Second, my wife's grandfather was standing at the base of Mt. Suribachi when the flag was raised. He's no longer with us, but he always held me spellbound with his remembrances of that and many other of his experiences.

Dear David... when are you coming to London? Hope to see you soon, mate.
Love it, I keep meaning to get involved with the London group maybe now.
Thanks for the posting, Dave! This shot was great fun to make, and really came about as an alternative to a more standard group shot at the end of one of our shoots.
A brilliant classic!!!
What a great idea and lots of fun. If the various strobist groups around the world reenact famous photos (keep it topical) with the definate lighting tone ...
Fantastic ... well done London. This brought a big grin to my face.
Oh my... Shall I call this "the light of our photographers's"?
This shot sums up what our community is about. People working together to create amazing images.
All the best shots are generally a result of teamwork - be it with models, make up artists , wardrobe, assistants.
You know what - people have been scared of sharing. But its happening - photography 2.0 is using the power of the net to share. If I have a well lit shot of my friends so should everyone.
The pencil has been around for a long time - but it does not stop new artists from drawing or new poets from writing.
Our London group is passionate and always keen to share and over the last 2 1/2 years we've become good friends as well with a common goal.

Great shot which tickled my sense of humour!
It could be that one step better and truer to the original by using a white reflector 'flag' instead.
I agree Lina, if only we had a California Sunbounce Micro with us. That would have been perfect.
Fantasti ideal, love it !!!
David, you might be interested in a series called World War II in HD. Despite the meaningless name, it has some really informative and quite raw content from the Pacific campaign, including Iwo Jima. Might give you more perspective on what your wife's grandfather went through over there, and I seem to recall they had some actual footage of the raising of the first and second flags on Iwo Jima. You can find the series on the iTunes store.
I have to say, your personal connection to the events depicted in the Joe Rosenthal photo takes my breath away.
I enjoy everything I read in this blog and the collegial nature of it is extraordinary.
It has helped many photographers in my community. Pros in particular are among the most dedicated followers here.

I was one of the observers when this was being done, I was actually involved in one or 2 takes but being the rebel that I am, I thought I'd just watch on the sideline. It was the highlight of the meetup.
This was taken at my first Strobist meet with the guys.... in at the deep end :)
I took the other shot of this, but David's one was my fave too :)
