Finnishing Touches

UPDATE: Sweet! Click thru to the full post w/comments, where Anssi Saviluoto has detailed how he shot the video with a POINT AND SHOOT and did the post production for the cool effects. Awesome -- thanks, Anssi!
__________

Meetups are lots of fun, and one of the best ways to meet other local Strobist readers and lighting enthusiasts. Get that many creative people into a room, and a video is likely to happen, too.

A boy and his guns, cool (legal) music and some bad-ass post make the video embeded above stand out from the pack. It's from the Lappeenranta (Finland) Strobist Meetup Group.

Heck, I'm ready to pack my bags and head to Finland for the next one -- if only because they probably have less snow than we do right now. Looks like they are having lots of fun, and I am seriously digging that post work.

Oh, and the soundtrack could hardly be more appropriate: "Plastic & Flashing Lights," by the band, Professor Kliq. You can download it here.

Those are a lot of fun. I recently shot some similar photos for a local stage production of Resorvoir Dogs. Wish I'd thought to use my smoke machine though.

Do come! But if you're sick of snow by now, you might want to wait... ;-) I had no idea such a meetup had taken place in my neck of the woods, thanks for letting us know. Looked awesome and the results were stunning.

Thanks for the feature. You are more than welcome to the next meetup David, but I gotta warn you, you might have to take your shovel with you. The snow level is pretty bad here too.

Stunning!

Great post in the pics, and great pics.

Great post in the video, love the 'warping' time-lapse, great video.

And the music is awesome as well...

Thanks for sharing David, I would have missed this on flickr!

It's all very cool; I particularly liked the very last credit: music under creative commons license. No ripping off another artist's work (via copyright violation of the music track), proving you can find good music with a bit of searching. Bravo folks.

Cool music - the fast moving scenes of people moving umbrellas around does not do a lot for me though.

Hi guys!

Great video! Is it possible you could tell a bit about how it's made?

Thanks!

Hi David,

I know this is WAY off topic, but didn't know how else to ask you.

Last year during the summer Olympics in Beijing, you had links to photographers blogs who were covering the event. I loved reading them and found them very interesting. I looked back in the history and couldn't find the links anymore. Will you be doing the same for the Winter Games in Vancouver?

Thanks,
Colin

David!

Thank YOU sooo much for posting the link for the music. I love it and I'm going to pay $ to license use of their music for my website.

They're really affordable. They really made it easy for me to pay them to license their music.

Jonas: Sure. I shot the video using my powershot A570 which is modded with the chdk firmware. I used the ultra intelvalvometer script. The firmware can ne found for most powershot point and shoots from chdk.wikia.com.

I set the camera to take a frame every third second and moved it around every hour or so. I brought the frames into lightroom and cropped them to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Then I applied a preset I've made using the 300 preset, from the Lightroom Killer tips blog, as a starting point.

I exported the frames at 1920 by 1080 resolution and brought them into After Effects and added a timewarp effect to effectively double the amount of frames making the movement a lot smoother.

I asked permission from everybody if I could use their final images, scrounged jamendo for cc licended music and added the images and titles in premiere.

Very neat, and I appreciate the follow up comment Anssi! I knew there was alternate firmware for the Canon DSLR, but didn't realize the availability for my G11. I am now happily playing with the intervolometer script on my G11. Thanks for the tip!

I dig it! How did they get the wobbly video effect? It's only wobbly where there's motion. Very cool.

Cool to see Finnish stuff on strobist!

This relates to the post by the facts that it was also made in Finland and the group had loads of fun making it. Thought you might want to see.
