UK GOOM* TRIP UPDATE

UPATED: Adds pubs (below) for meetups the evening before the seminars
__________

Quick updater for the UK seminar dates and pub meetups.

London and Birmingham are fully booked, but we still have a few seats left for Leeds on 5/26 and Edinburgh on 5/28. Details, and looking for good places to meet up for a pint (all invited) inside.
__________

First off, if you are in or near Leeds or Edinburgh and would like to attend, we've a few seats left for those locations.

Also, if you are local to Birmingham, Leeds or Edinburgh and can recommend a pub where we could meet up the evening before the seminars, please make your suggestion in the comments.

We'll have an open mixer from 6p-8p the night before each seminar, and all are welcome.

Alex from The Flash Centre will take a look at the suggestions and pick one for each city. Please help him by posting the name, address and why you think it a good choice in your comment. I'll update this post with full info, so please check back here for the latest as we approach the dates.

Very much looking forward to meeting you, so come on out!
__________

UPDATE: Below are the pubs at which we'll be meeting the evening before the workshops. I will be there at 6p and probably stay until about 8p before leaving home (still sober-ish) to prep for the next day's seminar. Whether you are going to the seminar or not, please stop by and say hi!

I've pre-empted my trigger happy strobist-spending-spree and ordered some cheap yongyuo flashes in anticipation of coming out of this wanting more lights than my SB600 :D

Will TFC be bringing any gadgets for purchase at the seminar? Just so I know to hand my other half my credit card the day before... Just a precaution...

My Friday nights always end up being late nights at work but if I can get there for the London eve I will do. I know peeps are talking about a pre-seminar meet as well which looking at the times would be a full english breakfast in a local cafe. I'm game for that on the Saturday morning! David I trust you've experienced the delights of overly-fat-saturated fried toast and bangers before? :D Best of luck!

Well, I really need to get one of those seats in Leeds!

As for a pub, naw, but I do have the pleasure of running the best coffee shop (according to The Independent) in York and I'd love to serve up some fine caffeine to fellow Strobists! If you happen to wander our way, it's Gatehouse Coffee, in Walmgate Bar, York.

Hope to see you in Leeds, or York, David!

David,
I took your seminar in the Bay Area a few years ago (it was GREAT), so I'll not rush out to my home from home, Edinburgh, to attend another. However, I have two suggestions for a pub y'all can meet in:

#1. Bennet's Bar @ 8 Leven Street (West End)is a great place for a chin wag and a pint. And they have Caledonian 80 on the stick. You gotta try it.

#2 The Cloisters‎ @ 26 Brougham Street

I don't know how good the pub grub is in either place, though.

My fave rave bar is Black Bo's, but it's not to everyone's taste, so I'll leave it off the list.

Enjoy your stay in Auld Reekie and be sure you make it to the Whisky Heritage Centre for a tour and a taste.

I hope you aren't staying in the Cow Gate...

Some suggestions for london

The porterhouse in covent garden, has a huge space, and an outdoor area, beer is good and not too expensive also has a nice nu-old pub feel to it but relaxed atmostphere and is walking distance of loads of other bars/restaurants

The Bunghole in Holborn... ok not the biggest pub in the world but worth it just for a photo outside with the pub's name lol http://tinyurl.com/368tcqk

Hey David, it's "Charles the Canadian" whom you met at TFC London. I'd wish you luck during your seminars, but you won't need it :-) Thanks again!

Edinburgh-

Cloisters is nice but tends to get crowded, never seen food there but the ale is top notch.

Downstairs at the Castle Arms (6 Johnston Terrace) is an old favourite of mine, spitting distance of the castle and no-one sits downstairs where there is plenty of space and sofas!

If the weather is good, The Pear Tree (38 West Nicolson St) beer garden is brilliant and has heaters to keep the chill off, inside has moderate space and good german beer.

I'm so glad you're doing a mixer event, I took your London course last time, its good to chat and unload the lighting geek!

David,

The Leeds Flickr group use the Wrens pub successfully, where they have a back room with a bar that we normally take as our own. Decent ales and parking close by for those that drive. http://www.thewrenshotel.co.uk
The Wrens Hotel
61A New Briggate,
Leeds
North Yorkshire
LS2 8JD

Alternatively the Victoria Hotel behind the town hall also has a large bar and function rooms that can be used by meeting groups.
Great George Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 3BB

Both are a very short walk from your hotel.

suggestions for London:

If there were to be an early morning breakfast meet: then If I remember rightly there is a very nice cafe in Russel Square on the grass.. which is civilised: if its raining or cold, you can sit inside...

Marchmont street has various restaurants if a more... food anlge were to be taken (e.g. two not too pricy Indians one in marchmont street, a nicer one in woburn place, but averagly priced...) Brunswick square itself is gentrified with a fair choice of different drinking and eating propositions... although covent garden is lovely.. it is a fair hike from brunswick square... and for those of use coming in from the suburbs a bit of a pain...

if going further afield: Greenwich has some very nice places incl. the traflagar tavern on the thames with a stunning view of canary wharf and the dome...i think meeting fora greasy fry up on Sat. morning could be excellent.. esp if David can be dragged along for a very special English cullinary treat... anyone know of a quality "greasy spoon" round that way... ? where are you staying David.. in the Holiday Inn presumably... ?

"GOOM" sounds like a great idea, but be sure not to utter a sigh after you say it because then you have a "GOOMAH trip" and you know how sensitive wives are about that sort of thing.

There's a large and quite cool rooftop bar at the City Hotel in Leeds. Panoramic night views of the city (would be a good spot for some strobistry), big balconies to sit out on, spacious - very nice indeed.

London - The Victoria around the corner from both Paddington Station and Lancaster Gate Tube is in a lovely area surrounded by old Mews at the edge of Hyde Park, very centrally located, cosy, and has a nice upstairs room that I believe can be reserved for a nominal fee...

Hi!

Just spoke to Alex at the flash centre; wondering if there was any consensus on where to meet in London, Friday evening before the "party". Apparently the Cross Keys is the nominated place. People expect to congregate from 7pm.. essentially when they arrive from work...

I couldn't see this posted above, my apologies if I'm simply posting what is already up there and I was being dense.
See you all later !

Hi David,

Thank you for a great seminar in Bermingham on Mon 24th. It was great to see how you pulled the outdoor shoots together. I`m not sure if anybody else has commented on this, but the bit.ly address that you gave for the pdf does not work.

Reagrds,

David-

Thanks for the kind words and for the heads up on the PDF.

It appears that MediaFire.com, the sharing site where I hosted the PDF, may be having an outage.

If that continues for any length of time, I will find an alternative means to get it to you, probably to have TFC send it out to the registered attendees.

Many thanks for your patience.

Best,
DH

Hi David,

Thanks for a very great day in Leeds yesterday. It was very informative and helped to cement some of those initial concepts as well as learn new ones. I came away inspired and eager to experiment further.

Thanks again and best of luck with your project which sounds both exciting and admirable.
