A Good Face for Radio

Terminally bored and trapped in your cubicle this afternoon?

Ibarionex Perello and I were finally able to mesh our schedules to do a podcast interview for The Candid Frame. It's 45 mins, and covers Strobist's early days, leaving the paper and what's next.

If you are so inclined, you can find it here.

If you are so bored, check out this cool behind the scenes video of a 1/500s HDR photomerge with off-camera strobes (some high-end gear). Some good peaks at the set-up during the video.

David- I ran for the car when I updated my I-pod and saw your name on my podcast list! Loved your perspective on the Ecology/Ecosystem point of view on photography and the photo business. Also, I totally get the "photography as a currency". I think it's something that's lost on a lot of people (pro's included).

Also, I appreciated your explanation of health care and the glitch on quitting the "day job". I'm curious as to what you did/do now for health care. Cause in a nutshell, that's the big hold up for me.

Ah, yes. In short, we pay through the nose. As someone who is self-employed, insurance is deductible. But co-pays, out-of-pocket costs, etc., are so only after you have spent 7.5% (I think) of of adjusted gross income on them.

So we decided to front-load the expense and get a decent health care plan. That was expensive, but we figured that for a variety of reasons (including the above) it made sense.

[rant]

What we did not know was that, while Blue Cross Blue Shield has a pretty good health care plan on the service side, on the accounting side it is essentially like being owned by mafia loan sharks.

Case in point: While we have been through the worst recession (by far) in my lifetime, BCBS has increased our premium costs by ~20%. EACH YEAR.

Of course, they send a little note each year to let you know they are going to hit you with yet another unsustainable cost increase. But they do not give you any contact channel to ask Q's about it (i.e., are you being singled out or is everyone getting violated in this way) etc.

From the customer side, it feels like BCBS is primarily an extortion scheme with a small side business in health care.

It has been the worst thing about going solo, by a long shot.

David,

some carriers will reduce rates if you provide evidence of good health (i.e. blood work, etc.).

may be worth some grubbing aroung

As a regular visitor to the site, over the last couple of years or so, I've certainly gleaned an awful lot of information that's not readily available. Not a fan of podcasts an exception was made in this case and to my amazement listened to all of it, that's a first for me! It was, informative, entertaining, but most of all inspiring. You have helped so many aspiring photographers and all for free, if they choose. A heart felt thank you.

That's a great interview, DH. Very interesting. I've been following The Candid Frame for some time now, and had to do a double take when I opened up his web site yesterday and saw your shot of the cello player on top. For a second, I thought I was on the wrong web site!

For those not familiar with The Candid Frame, you should check it out. It's very different from Strobist, in that it provides no tech info whatsoever. Instead, Ibarionex brings out the heart & soul of his guests, finding out what makes them tick and how they got to where they are today.

Great interview. Would love to hear more on how you can force yourself to take the assignment to get a photo of "Spring" that is interesting and different from the assignment in each of the past 20 years.

Interesting how you tie the freelance, local shots, and blog into a brand...

(totally agree on the rant).

David,

The BS in BCBS doesn't stand for Blue Shield... it stands for BS. We experienced the same increases as you.

Ibarionex has an awesome podcast. I tried to not let the healthcare conversation out-shout the photography conversation. Interesting, however, to hear about the motivation, concerns and priorities in moving into self-employment. Good fortune to you and family in the future.

Great interview. As a long time fan of the blog its almost disturbing to hear how close it was for the blog to shut down.

And for something so stupid as health care.

Stupid?! Whoot, let me explain.

I live in Finland. We have a nice, very left wing kinda health care system. If I get sick the trip to the doctors office is almost free. Bit over 10 euros, if Im not complitely mistaken. Fortunate me I haven't had the need to check in.

Dental, dont get me started. Basic check up and cleaning for 30e.

:)

okay,okay,i quit.

Keep it up David!
Love the blog!

David,

I loved the interview on Candid Frame. Ibarionex, like you, is a class act. Since leaving Photojournalism as a career about 12 years ago I have been struggling to find a way to get the creative juices and adrenalin flowing again. You outlined exactly what I need to do step by step in the interview and I am so psyched to get started. Its all about working locally where you have the time and (eventually) the contacts and relationships to make photographs that no one else can.

I can't wait to get started on my own 20-year documentary of my home town/county. I have about 3 shoots in mind at the moment and all of them will be getting some prints from me!

I was curious if any of your documentary work about your home county is available publicly or is it just folded into the Strobist as you complete the shoots?

Also, do you use SmugMug or something similar to handle your reprint businesss for your clients/subjects, or do you have a custom set-up?

Thanks again David for being so generous with your knowledge and TIME ! I totally get how valuable that is.

best,
david
