Dan Winters: New Website; F/stop Interview

Travis Smith, Dan Winters' first assistant, emailed me last week to say that the website had been completely revamped. Where there were about 100 photos there are now around 500. Suffice to say this is probably more interesting than whatever you would have been working on in your cubicle for the next few minutes.
It gets better. Winters also gave a very good interview on The F/stop, in case you want a little more in-depth inspiration.
(Remember to look like you are working.)

When I grow up I want to be David Hobby. When I really grow up I want to be Dan Winters. What a collection of portraits. In the meantime I'll plod along.... Thanks David.
Wow. I don't know what to say. Mr. Winters' body of work is incredible, inspiring, and humbling beyond belief.
I got to listen to Dan Winters speak here in my hometown. All I have to say is what an amazing guy. Definetley a great source of inspiration.
Amazing portraiture. Straight to the bookmark room!
ok, a Reverse Engineering question.
on Dan's site, there's a Mark Wahlberg portrait.
i'm trying to see in his eyes what's going on with the lighting - Catch Light Deciphering - CLD TM ;)
do you have a guess?
thanks :)
Work like that reflects a gift, not mere talent
Thanks for this. I clipped his portrait of Mchael Haneke (People of Interest #7) from the New Yorker and have in my inspiration folder.
What's great about his site is you can see the images they way he cropped them, not the magazine. In this case the difference was subtle, yet significant.
Cool.
I printed the article out so I could achieve "looks like working" status a little more reliably. I love this man.
Good God!! Okay, anyone want to buy a camera? Obviously I have no clue how to use one given this is what you're ACTUALLY able to do with it. Unbelievable work.
I have a terrible lot of mr Winter's photos in my inspiration folder, because he is just that fricking good!!!!!!
But, I do also notice that he uses a lot of similar setups. (which I find to be a bit disappointing and after a while annoying)
A lot of on axis ring light and near axis softbox or umbrella
I am thus wondering how much happens in post since a lot of the pics are very different.
Or it could simply be that I'm wrong in my reverse engineering... What do you all think?
And of course (just to beat the comments below), yes I know, my work isn't that good, so who am I to talk about his setups? Well he is really really really good, but why can't I question the best in order to learn from it?
All and all, I love his site and am so incredibly glad he put soooo many pictures on them --> They help the less knowledgeable and/or gifted
Love that he also made an iPhone optimized site to go along with his new site.
This man is an artist. I love his work. Some people don't know what they're looking at, though. My aunt told me she preferred my photos to Winters' (rubbish, obviously), but she wasn't just being nice - she meant it. No disrespect to my aunt but too often another HDR'd-to-fuck picture of a tree in a field on flickr is what gets people's attention. This level of of combined craft, vision and talent is rare, and yet it can go unappreciated. Go figure. HOLY SHIT Lionel Richie is advertising crisps on TV!
Wow!
I love the temperature he plays with and the neutral tones of his backgrounds. Absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing!
I'm curious about the photo of Michael Jordon with all the rings on. The lighting on his face is tight like a snoot. However, it is very soft. I tried to duplicate it with a gridded snoot, but couldn't get it as soft. Anyone have ideas?
@Ofir Abe, to answer your question, in this image, (and in a good lot of dans images) he places a soft box or in this case it may be a beauty dish, on one side of the subject, and then fills with a ring flash. on a lot of the portraits he will also use a flag (what man people incorrectly cal la gobo) on the light on the same side so that it gets a really nice falloff. he did not do that on the mark walburg photo because the hoody is giving a similar fall off effect
