Hard Work You Do, Then A Master Will You Be

Remember that "Hasselblad Masters, outtakes-and-all" video done by our favorite A-lister, Chase Jarvis, a few months back?

Well, this is what the shoots were for: Check out the December "Hasselblad Masters" page to see the results.

Interesting note: Chase turned pro only 12 years ago. He's also self-taught. Any of you folks who think you have what it takes to put in the long, hard, smart hours -- you could find a far worse compass point than this guy.

(And, mind you, back in 1996 we didn't have none of this free internet learnin' stuff, neither.)

It's amazing that we have people like Chase in photography today. Someone who is willing to take the time to share the knowledge they have gathered is pretty darn cool if you ask me. Plus he lives in Seattle (my home town), so that's good. Seattle, the home of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Chase Jarvis.

Wow he is so young to be a master, is amazing how much he has got to this point, the question is, how much of this is talent and how much is hard work, because hard work without talent is nothing and talent without hard work is nothing also.

Chase became a big inspiration for me when I learned he was self taught. I picked up my N75 almost one year ago to the day and started to learn on my own. I knew nothing before, couldn't tell you what a f-stop was or what shutter speed had to do with anything.

Hopefully in 12 years I can have at least a fraction of the success Chase has had.

And so many thanks to those who are willing to share what they know for free. It has helped me, and I hope that what I have been able to contribute back to the community has helped others just starting.

The biggest question with Chase's work is....Is he an aritst whose meidum is photography or a photopher who is an aritst??
My vote is the former! I can only stive to be as good a photograher (strobost...) but I doubt I can match his artistic abilities.

Its a great success story and shows that going to school for something doesn't guarantee you crap! Still paying off those student loans and I've learned more from this site than 4 years of college. Thanks to all my professors!

"No intarwebs in 1996?"

What David said was, "free internet learnin' stuff" which is not the same.

I think it was a veiled reference also to the lack of a Strobist web resource, which will accelerate anyone's education.

I think its pretty cool that Chase Jarvis and other masters like Russell James have no formal photography education. Although Russell James expounds his free internet learning on a reality TV show. Although I have no desires to make it "pro" its good to know that any knowledge that the masters have. I also have at my disposal. Although purchasing couple of H3Ds is probably not easily doable in the near future.
