Labor Day Weekend Speedlinks

Summer is almost over, but not before one more round of white-belted speedlinks. The latest batch, inside:
__________

• Vivitar, the maker of the (once) ultra-dependable 285HV flash, has been sold from one conglomerate to another conglomerate. We'll have to see if that helps the manufacturing quality, hurts it, or if they kill the 285 altogether.

• Robert Benson (who you may remember from his SPOY win and this awesome repeating flash volleyball shot is now blogging. Some very good commercial shooter -related stuff so far.

• Rachel, over at S!TB, riffs on Monte Isom's amazing shoot for Adidas. Most important tip: How to get a field full of Chinese talent to smile... (Thanks, Nathanael)

• WIRED shows you how to get wired: Charlie Sorrel's newb SB-24 tutorial.

• From left field, but worth the OT trip: Richard Hernandez, from Multimedia Shooter, on how to mount your 35mm lenses on you camcorder.

Sorry, nothing to do with small lights, but I've always loved those lines.

Oops, sorry for exaggerating, Loudon, but that should have been...

That's III, not IV. Still a great song, on a great album, though.

I'd be surprised if there are any more Vivitar flashes.

It looks like they went under and the buy-out was for IP and trademarks, which typically means no inventory or other assets were purchased. The Vivitar home page is gone, with a "stay tuned" message posted.

There is a PR over at the Sakar website here which talks about using the acquisition to add to their line-up. Which makes sense given that they appear to be a manufacturer for brands and do not have a brand of their own (until now).

I'd lay odds that the brand will be back on some low end P&S models, but nothing else.

I swear I make more typos than you do, but my name is spelled with an 'a' and not an 'i'. Like in the Bible. heehee. No worries, everyone does it. I have countless birthday greetings to 'Nathaniel', 'Nathanel' and even 'Nathiel' ; )

Enjoying the Robert Benson blog, thanks for the link!

If you're interested in using 35mm still camera lenses on a video camera, then the 35mm adapter version of David Hobby is a guy called Philip Bloom - check out his site here...
http://philipbloom.co.uk/

He's a well-respected video camera guy who's made a bunch of beautiful short films using such adapters - inspirational stuff.

Another very good lighting blog from an up-and-comer - probably already there guy named Dusin Snipes. He has lots of pictures, most with fantastic light, and quite a few have setup shots and explanations of the setup. Check it.

Okay, so for some reason, I was dreaming that Vivitar had purchased my last employer while I was working there. And I was trying to ask them about the 285HV.

I've been having weird dreams lately.
