And the September Pocketwizards go to...

Congrats to German photographer Puthan Valiyandi, who used a set of eBay remotes to win himself a set of Pocketwizard Plus II's in September's video contest.

The coolest part of the video? Gotta be the "flashlight" mod. I want one.

We still have two more sets to give away -- details here.

Wow, the flashlight mod / reflector is a good idea! I particularly liked the presentation. Grats to him for winning the PWs!

Looks awesome. :D Well deserved, for sheer originality of sticking a flash inside a torch! Most people would have PP'd the torch light in, but hey, why not just rebuild a flash inside a torch!? :D Congrats dude.

I think, this is really cool. Not only the shot, but also the video.

I'm not sure i like the final picture; but i really love the preparation and his shoot diagram... in 3d... and it moves! The trigger issue encountered might have been caused by those big metallic cages. He really deserves those pocketwizards, he'll really make good use of them if he continues with this kind of shoots :D

The flashlight mod is very cool but obviously not for the faint-of-heart electronically. (Or, in my case, the lazy at heart.) But it might be easy enough to rig up a lazy variation and not have to sacrifice a flash in the process. My thought was to buy one of those large 12v battery flashlights since, if you gutted it, you might have room for a fully assembled flash body plus a PWIIplus. Heavy use would mean being careful about heat build-up inside, and you'd have to be careful to get a "normal" (for a flashlight) distribution of light in your result... but to me that sounds much easier than tearing apart a flash in order to fit it into a D-Cell flashlight body.

Great video. Love the flashgun. Maybe combine that idea and this one:

One of the videos that "You Tube" Brought up after this video was finished was the "Strobist rocket pack." It's short but sweet....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pea5e2Z5gyE

best wishes to the winnner!
the video is absolutely amazing, real cool animations.
final picture would not be my choice - there is too much black in the front, no details.

Thanks a lot!!
I'm very excited to have won and appreciate much for you comments :)

I was planning to upgrade to something MUCH MORE reliable than
my GI Triggers... and now I have the Rolls Royce of them... *wow*

Anyway, I admit I first planned to put some flash in a large torch body- but that colided with the idea of the picture... I needed a small torch- so I took a 30 year old hanimex flash and added features... like the output control.

@bmillios
wow! thanx for the link! :)

Danish and Priyesh Puthan Valiyandi (we're two guys ;))

The flashlight mod is brilliant and he certainly does deserve the PWs.

The only thing that really jumped out at me was the fact that the model was holding the gas mask on. With all the rest of the ingenuity, you'd think they could have gotten some binder clips to keep it on. For some reason my eye jumped right to it

Nice concept guys - Hopefully the "technical issues" would be resolved with your new PWs

Congrats !!

Thanks to everyone! My brother did a fantastic job!! (BTW I was the "model"...)

Hey anonymus (he last one), I didn`t hold the mask. I know, the pose is not perfect, but it was supposed to look like I`m trying to shield my head & eyes from "the nuclear flash".

Best regards,

Priyesh

I am impressed!!! Anyone who gets those ebay remotes to actually fire and get a picture should win a prize.

The day the Radio Popper Jr. is finally available is the last day any of those pieces of garbage are ever sold.

Waldo,

I've used the Gizmo (ebay) remotes for over 5000 shots since getting them 2 months ago.

Yes, I've had misfires, mainly when I was too CLOSE to the flash. However, there is no denying that they work well within short to mid range distances, and are more than worth the cost.

Consider that they are cheaper than nearly all other flash accessories, even those of dubious value like the gary fong stuff that I was foolish enough to buy.

Would I like to have a set of PW's? Of course. But could I ever justify paying for them as an experiened amateur photographer who doesn't sell photos? No way.

Just wanted to set the record straight that at least this photographer has never had serious issues with the ebay remotes.

Yes, I'm also the kind of guy who is happy to drive a Honda rather than fork over for a Ferrari.

BTW, it goes without saying, but the video and flash torch idea are awesome!

WOW!! I don't know if it was intentional or not but it looks exactly like a screenshot from the Half-Life 2 video game franchise. . .of which I am obsessed! Excellent prep work and video to boot! So much thought and effort went into this. Congratulations to the winner! In my opinion you deserve several sets of PWs! --Chuck

I'm interested in getting started with wireless triggers. Are the "ebay remotes" just a bunch of different brands of the same triggers? Should I order the Cactus V2s set from gadgetinfinity.com (the original makers?), or find one of the rebadged "v2s" remotes from ebay? I'm using an XTi with a 580EX II, and would love to get it off flash so I can take advantage of the light box I'm building. :)

Gamer30:

I don't know the answer to your question about whether the "ebay remotes" are more than just one brand.

I don't buy from ebay anyways, so I just bought V2's directly from the manufacturer, gadgetinfinity (www.gadgetinfinity.com/product.php?productid=16766).

I had purchased 1 kit plus an extra receiver for my Pentax system, and all work great (other than when I tried handholding the flash while taking photos, in which case I did get some cases of the flash not firing).

I was shocked at how fast they delivered it (don't remember now, I think it was about 8 days).

Hope this helps.

Does not directly relate to this post but today, October 21 Wally Skalij of the Los Angeles Times has a killer giant color photo on the front page of the sports section. Very "Strobist"! This guy is the best.
