Flashlight Sprint Ad: Real, or CGI?

It's real. And the "making of" video was even more interesting to me than the original.

This is so cool. I have to try it. I am thinking it might be neat to pop the flashlight artists with a pair of back/rim flashes (gobo'd, of course) at the beginning of the frame to reveal them.

I have no delusions of actually being able to create even a one-minute animated movie. But maybe a cool still frame to get my feet wet.

Something.

I just love that look.

It probably turned out so good because it was shot with a Canon.

Hi, I've actually done something kind of like this, of course not animated. But one night I was bored and thought of this and got the inspiration. I did it and sent it to be wife at work, of course I got some brownie points in the morning when she checked her email.

It's not the best, but it was a 10 min job. This Sprint ad might just inspire me to do something like this more in the future.

When there's 34 seconds left, I think you can just make out some sort of wire frame that the actors might be using to guide the movements of their lights.

These kinds of photos are fun. I took some last summer when I stumbled on a group of kids that just kicked our butts.

Their web page is here. Clicky clicky!

I did a light painting portrait like that a few years ago. All it took was two flashlights, a blue gel and a tripod.

I was wondering how long it took them to actually shoot that. Sounds like 4 days from the video. Like just about everyone I've played around with the lightpainting thing some, but my efforts took a good 3 hours to get 4 frames, I couldn't imagine the work involved to produce something like that (well, after seeing the making of I have a small idea, but still, wow.) Amazing stuff, thanks for posting it!

Very cool - reminds me of one of my favorite pictures from July 4th celebrations: long exposures of people drawing shapes with sparklers finished up with a flash burst to expose them. You can get some neat shots that way, but the first thing you realize is just how difficult it is to "draw" things in mid-air that don't look a total mess!

I have heard from quite a few pros that 10 years ago light painting was THE coolest thing in commercial ad work, and we don't see it so often now.

I love this ad, it's so cool, and I wonder what makes it different then the stuff that fell out of fashion ten years ago, is it that it's animated/filmed, cause it made me want to go out and try it too!

As it goes, I just stumbled upon an artsy project that two German folks are doing: Lightmark. Check it out at http://www.lightmark.de/ (I'm not affiliated).

I do things like this all the time... Its not hard to do and all you need is a tripod and a camera that you can maually set the exposure. Just the other day I made a group of 3 photos the said "I" "*heart*" "JEN" for my girlfriend for valentines day. To make the 3 pictures it took all of 4 minuets to do. And as long as you can visualize things infront of you "drawing" in mid-air is the easy part. The hardest part I had was staing in the photo (I was really close to the camera), but in the end it was easy.
